Yamaha C40II Full-Size Classical Guitar — Natural Finish
Product description
This listing refers to a full-size classical guitar intended primarily for students and casual performers. The instrument features a solid spruce top supported by meranti back and sides, with a rosewood fingerboard and a matching rosewood bridge. The body and headstock are completed in a glossy natural finish that highlights the wood grain.
The C40II is supplied as the guitar itself — a standard full-scale classical size with nylon strings and a neck profile suited to traditional classical technique. Its construction emphasizes ease of playability for beginners while offering tonal characteristics that appeal to more experienced players returning to nylon strings.
Yamaha’s C-series is known for consistent workmanship across this model range; the companion CS variants use the same design and tone goals in a reduced, more compact body for players who prefer a smaller instrument. The C40II is typically used for lessons, practice, classroom settings, and informal performance situations.
Pros
- Well-balanced tone from spruce top and meranti body
- Comfortable full-size neck with rosewood fingerboard
- Solid, lightweight construction with glossy finish
Cons
- Factory strings may be swapped for preference
- Full-size body may be large for younger children
- Minor setup adjustments can improve action for some players
VerdictThe Yamaha C40II is an excellent entry-level classical guitar that balances solid materials and dependable playability. With a spruce top, meranti back and sides, and rosewood fingerboard and bridge under a gloss finish, it gives a warm, clear nylon-string voice and comfortable action for beginners and returning players. Expect good build quality and a lightweight, sturdy instrument that responds

Great for beginners — worth spending a bit more
Perfect choice for someone learning guitar. Nylon strings are gentle on the fingers and the overall quality exceeds cheaper rivals. Tuning is stable once strings settle and the action is comfortable compared to some low-end instruments.

This one — buy it
Exceptional build and tone for the money. It holds tune well, feels solid and looks sharp. Great for beginners or anyone learning classical technique. Only needed a quick tune after unboxing; strings were usable but I kept a spare set ready.

Lovely tone and finish
As a long-time classical player I appreciate the smooth build and balanced weight. The size suits most hand shapes and the sound is airy and sweet—true nylon character. The strings included were fine to get started and the guitar inspired me to pick it up again after years away.

Wow — exceeded expectations
Fantastic tone and surprising presence for a modest instrument. I bought it for travel and it quickly became a studio favorite; musicians who tried it insisted on using it in recordings. It records beautifully and is resilient enough for casual travel.

Beautiful gift for a child
Bought this as a present for a nine-year-old; the teacher praised the sound and said it should serve well for several years. Attractive appearance and recommended for young starters.

Well made, needed a small setup
For someone with limited experience this guitar feels very well crafted. The action arrived a bit high for my taste; I lowered the saddle slightly by sanding to make it more comfortable. Also seems closer to the earlier C-40 in internal bracing, but playability and tone are very good.

Outstanding value
You won’t find a better-sounding full-size nylon guitar at this level. You may wish to replace the factory wound strings over time, but restringing is straightforward and a good upgrade. Very playable, light yet sturdy, with clean action and no buzzing on mine. Note: as a full-size instrument it may be too large for smaller children.
