SMA Female to SO-239 (UHF) Adapter — Coax Connector for Handheld Radios
Product description
This kit contains two SMA female to UHF (SO-239) female adapters designed for 50 ohm RF systems. Each converter features a brass center conductor with a gold-plated contact for dependable signal transfer; the connector shell is plated with nickel and gold to resist corrosion and help maintain a low VSWR for more efficient transmission.
Connector type: UHF female (SO-239) to SMA female. Impedance: 50Ω. Package content: 2 x SMA Female to UHF Female Adapter. Insulation resistance: 5000 MΩ. Temperature specifications are provided for a wide operating range: general tolerance up to high temperatures (listed at 300°C) and a practical operating window from -65°C to +165°C (PE cable limit ~ +85°C).
Intended uses include adapting handheld transceivers (Baofeng UV-5R, BF-F8HP, UV-82, UV17R and similar HTs), DMR radios with external antenna capability, CB/mobile antennas with PL-259 terminations, and connecting rooftop scanner antennas to RTL‑SDR dongles that accept SMA inputs. It’s commonly used for vehicle magnetic mounts, base antennas, SWR checking, mobile scanners, CCTV, wireless LAN and other RF or microwave applications.
The adapters are built to provide a secure, tight fit for testing or permanent installs where an SMA-equipped device must mate with a standard PL-259 antenna. While they improve antenna options and signal performance for handheld radios, users should avoid excessive mechanical strain on radio connectors and consider weatherproofing for outdoor or exposed installations.
Pros
- Gold-plated center pin and plated shell for reliable contact
- 50Ω design lowers VSWR for better transmission
- Works with Baofeng, Kenwood, RTL‑SDR and PL-259 antennas
Cons
- Can be difficult to remove due to tight fit
- Not inherently weatherproof without sealing
- Adds a connector junction that may introduce slight loss
VerdictA robust, low-loss adapter option for turning handheld radios into base- or vehicle-mounted setups. Well-built with brass internals and plated contacts to improve transmission efficiency. Works with a wide range of handheld HTs, CB/mobile antennas, and SDR dongles. Tight fit ensures secure connections, though protection against weather and strain should be considered. Sturdy option for vehicle use
We needed adapters to connect our handhelds to vehicle antennas. Other solutions failed, but these are heavy-duty, reliable, and provide a solid connection. Highly recommended.

Better than flimsy patch cords
Prefer this to the thin patch cord that developed intermittent breaks. Haven't used it on-air yet, but seems durable.

A must-have for Baofeng users
Opened up antenna choices for my Baofeng. Used with a magnetic mount on a UV17R — no issues and noticeably better reception than the stock antenna.
