Bedroom Oasis: Unveiling Our Serene Sanctuary (Part 2)

Following on from Part 1 of our bedroom makeover journey, where we delved into the initial state of the room and the groundwork laid for its transformation, today marks an exciting milestone. I am absolutely thrilled to finally unveil the finished room, thoughtfully styled and beautifully furnished. It has been a remarkable journey since we first encountered the space, bravely tackling the dated 1960s carpet and that rather unfortunate red panelling. What stands before you now is a testament to mindful design and dedicated effort: a truly lovely, relaxing sanctuary, a perfect escape from the ongoing bustle of renovations elsewhere in our home. Creating a bedroom that feels both chic and calming was our ultimate goal, and I believe we’ve achieved a serene retreat where we can truly unwind and recharge.

Our vision for this bedroom was always clear: to create a space that promotes tranquility, offers visual clarity, and functions effortlessly as a personal haven. Every decision, from the choice of colour palette to the selection of textiles and furniture, has been carefully considered to contribute to an atmosphere of calm and comfort. The transformation from a forgotten, dated room into this modern, inviting space fills us with immense satisfaction, and I’m eager to share the details that brought this dream to life. Join me as we explore the elements that make this room our favourite new corner of the house.

The Essence of Minimalism: Furniture Selection

A core principle for our bedroom design was minimalism. We aimed for a streamlined environment, believing that less clutter equals more calm. Aside from the bed itself, we intentionally kept large items of furniture to a minimum. This decision was largely influenced by our upcoming project: transforming the adjacent box room into a dedicated walk-in wardrobe. This ingenious solution will allow us to house all our clothing and accessories externally, freeing up the main bedroom to remain an uncluttered, expansive retreat.

The dressing table, a beautiful piece from Habitat, provides an indispensable and stylish solution for daily essentials. Its integrated storage is perfect for neatly tucking away items like my hairdryer, makeup, and toiletries, ensuring they’re accessible yet out of sight. Beyond its practicality, it offers a designated spot to sit and prepare for the day, adding a touch of routine and luxury to the mornings. This piece holds a special place, as it’s from a collaboration I undertook with Habitat a few years ago, proving that timeless design remains relevant and cherished.

Complementing the dressing table is a versatile white stool from ByALEX. I’ve found this stool to be incredibly adaptable, having used it in various capacities throughout our home – from a chic side table in the living room to a practical bedside table. In this new bedroom, against the warm, pale wood floor, its simple form and clean lines feel perfectly at home, reinforcing the room’s serene and functional aesthetic. Its light footprint helps maintain the open feel, demonstrating that even small pieces can make a significant impact on a room’s overall atmosphere.

Curated Beauty: Art & Ceramics

Adding personal touches through art and ceramics is crucial for creating a space that feels lived-in and loved, even within a minimalist framework. I have a deep appreciation for beautifully crafted ceramics, and this bedroom provides the perfect quiet backdrop to truly enjoy them. Each piece has been chosen for its subtle beauty and artisanal quality, contributing to the room’s tranquil character without overwhelming it.

The elegant teapot, a creation by Steven Will, exemplifies understated design. Its form and finish speak volumes about the craftsmanship involved, making it a focal point without shouting for attention. The mugs also play an important role in adding character; the rich, dark grey mug is a distinctive piece by Sue Pryke, offering a grounding contrast, while the lighter grey one, by Jono Smart, introduces a delicate nuance. These pieces aren’t merely decorative; they evoke a sense of thoughtful collection, adding warmth and personality that resonate with the room’s overarching theme of serenity. They remind us that true luxury often lies in the quality and story behind everyday objects.

Beyond the ceramics, a beautiful etching by Clare Grossman holds pride of place, a cherished birthday present from Graham. This artwork was carefully selected from a charming gallery in Aldeburgh during a memorable trip to Suffolk, adding a layer of personal history and sentiment to the room. Grossman’s delicate work brings a subtle sophistication and visual depth, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere without competing for attention. Art in a minimalist space serves not as mere decoration, but as a window to reflection, personal stories, and aesthetic pleasure. It’s these meaningful pieces that truly complete a room, transforming it from a functional space into a deeply personal sanctuary.

Crafting Comfort: The Curtains

One of the design challenges in this room was its unusually wide window. This particular dimension made finding suitable pre-made curtains a significant hurdle. While brands like H&M, Urbanara, La Redoute, and Zara offer fantastic linen curtains, their standard widths typically don’t exceed 140cm. This is perfectly adequate for the tall, narrow windows often found in Victorian or Georgian properties, but it simply doesn’t work for the wider sills characteristic of many 1930s houses, like ours.

After much searching, I decided to embrace a DIY approach and make my own. I sourced a beautiful light grey prewashed linen fabric from Ada & Ina, renowned for their quality natural textiles. Although it had been years since I last operated a sewing machine, I was surprisingly pleased with the outcome. This hands-on project allowed for complete creative control, ensuring the curtains perfectly met both our aesthetic and practical requirements. I wanted them to possess a generous volume, so I opted for extra-wide fabric (280cm), eliminating the need for a central seam and creating a more seamless, luxurious drape. Furthermore, I deliberately made them quite long – over a foot longer than the actual window drop – to allow them to softly puddle on the floor. This intentional pooling adds a layer of relaxed elegance and visual softness, enhancing the room’s serene ambiance and contributing significantly to the overall textural richness of the space. It’s a small detail that makes a big impact on the feeling of understated luxury.

Illuminating Serenity: Thoughtful Lighting Choices

Lighting plays a pivotal role in establishing the mood of any room, especially a bedroom designed for relaxation. Each light source in our sanctuary has been chosen with deliberation to contribute to a sense of calm and warmth. For bedside illumination, the exquisite oak lamp from Kovac Family has found its perfect home. I acquired this lamp some time ago, captivated by its elegant design and natural material, patiently waiting for the ideal spot to showcase its beauty. Its gentle glow provides the perfect ambient light for reading or winding down, without being overly harsh or intrusive.

The main lighting fixture for the room required a great deal of consideration and internal debate. I wanted something functional yet unobtrusive, a piece that would illuminate the space effectively without becoming an overpowering visual statement. After exploring numerous options, I eventually settled on this beautiful opal glass lantern from Heal’s. Its design is quiet and subtle, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the room’s aesthetic rather than compete for attention with other elements. The diffused light it provides creates a soft, inviting atmosphere, perfectly aligning with our goal of a serene and cocooning bedroom. This choice reinforces the idea that sometimes, the most impactful design decisions are those that embrace simplicity and harmony, allowing the overall feeling of the space to shine through.

The Heart of the Room: Bed and Luxurious Linens

The bed, being the undeniable focal point of any bedroom, deserved special attention. Graham meticulously crafted the bed frame himself, a personal touch that imbues the room with even greater character. I then painted it in Farrow and Ball’s “All Black,” a choice that might seem bold for a minimalist, tranquil space, but which actually offers a sophisticated depth rather than a harsh contrast. This particular shade of black is incredibly rich and soft, providing a grounding anchor for the room’s otherwise light palette, without feeling oppressive. Buoyed by the recent success of my curtain-making endeavour, one of my next exciting projects will be to design and construct a bespoke headboard to perfectly complement our custom bed frame. This will allow for another layer of personalized style and comfort, further cementing the bed as the ultimate retreat.

Layering luxurious linens further elevates the sleeping experience. The beautiful throw draped across the bed, which I previously highlighted in a dedicated post, is from ZigZag Zurich’s exquisite Artists Blanket Collection. Its unique design and high-quality fabrication add an artistic touch and a tactile dimension that is both inviting and visually appealing. For the main bedding, we opted for pristine white bed linen from Christy’s Enigma collection. The crispness and purity of white linen instantly convey a sense of cleanliness and luxury, providing a serene foundation for peaceful sleep. To complete the look, cushions from The White Company (a previous season collection, though similar styles can be found here) add a final layer of comfort and decorative interest. These carefully chosen elements combine to create a bed that is not just for sleeping, but a true sanctuary of comfort and style.

A significant upgrade to our sleep comfort came courtesy of Scooms, who generously sent me one of their magnificent duvets for testing. This Hungarian goose down duvet is a truly innovative all-season solution, cleverly comprised of two separate duvets. There’s a lighter 4.5 tog summer duvet and a warmer 9 tog autumn duvet. These can be used independently during their respective seasons or easily joined together to create a luxuriously warm 13.5 tog duvet for the coldest winter months. The immediate difference in sleep quality was remarkable. The duvet contours beautifully over the body, providing an enveloping warmth without feeling heavy. The summer weight has been an absolute dream for the recent milder weeks, offering just the right amount of insulation. However, with the clocks soon to go back and temperatures beginning to dip, I’m eagerly anticipating the switch to the cozier autumn duvet, ensuring a perfect night’s sleep year-round. Investing in quality bedding like this truly transforms the sleep experience into one of ultimate comfort and indulgence.

The Power of Subtlety: Texture & Colour Palette

While the colour palette in this bedroom may appear understated, leaning heavily into soft neutrals, it’s a deliberate choice that underpins the entire design philosophy. There isn’t a riot of colours vying for attention; instead, I’ve focused intensely on introducing a rich tapestry of textures. This approach creates visual interest and depth, inviting the eye to explore and the senses to engage without overwhelming the peaceful atmosphere. We’ve layered elements such as natural wood, smooth stoneware, luxurious linen, resilient jute, and organic seagrass. Each material brings its unique tactile quality and subtle visual variation, contributing to a harmonious and inviting environment.

The walls are painted in Farrow and Ball Strong White. I am a long-time devotee of Farrow and Ball paints; while they may not be the most budget-friendly option, I consistently find their colours to be exceptionally liveable and enduringly stylish. “Strong White” is far from a plain white; it possesses a delicate undertone that prevents it from feeling stark, instead providing a soft, luminous backdrop that enhances the natural light and allows the textures and forms within the room to truly sing. This subtle warmth prevents the minimalist aesthetic from feeling cold, instead contributing to the desired cocooning effect.

Introducing a touch of greenery is always a wonderful way to inject life and a sense of freshness into any indoor space. We’ve placed a beautiful olive tree in the corner, hoping it thrives in its new indoor setting. My outdoor olive tree flourishes, but I confess a slight apprehension about maintaining this one indoors, as they can be notoriously temperamental. Fingers crossed it adapts well, adding its natural grace and subtle colour to our serene sanctuary. The charming seagrass basket, sourced from The White Company, houses the olive tree and itself is a beautiful textural addition. Its organic weave provides a rustic contrast to the smoother linens and ceramics, enhancing the layered look and feel of the room.

The braided rug on the floor provides another lovely textural detail. While it currently serves as a charming accent, my long-term plan is to eventually introduce a larger minimalist rug. A larger rug will not only enhance the room’s warmth and acoustic properties but also act as a grounding element, visually anchoring the various zones of the bedroom. For now, however, this smaller piece adds sufficient character and comfort, and the larger rug can patiently wait until all other elements are perfectly in place. This gradual approach allows for careful consideration and ensures each addition genuinely enhances the space.

Further enhancing the room’s comfort and charm, a luxurious monogrammed dressing gown, a thoughtful gift from Soak&Sleep after Design Hunter was kindly featured as their Blog of the Month, rests invitingly on the elegant J77 chair by Hay. This Danish design classic, available here, seamlessly combines functionality with minimalist aesthetics. Its clean lines and comfortable form make it a perfect addition, providing a spot for contemplation or simply a place to drape a soft throw. Each element in this room, from the grandest piece of furniture to the smallest decorative item, has been chosen to contribute to a cohesive vision of serenity and sophisticated comfort.

The Enduring Feeling of Sanctuary

Above all else, my unwavering desire for this room was to imbue it with a pervasive sense of lightness, softness, and tranquility. While other areas of our home might eventually see the introduction of bolder, darker shades to create contrast and drama, I deliberately chose to maintain an exceptionally light and airy colour palette in this space. In an era where many of us are constantly striving for ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ on platforms like Instagram, it’s incredibly tempting to focus primarily on how a room *looks* – perhaps by incorporating vivid colours or eye-catching prints for dramatic effect. However, my design philosophy has always prioritised how a space *feels*. The true measure of successful design, for me, lies in the emotional response it evokes.

And this space, I am delighted to say, now feels profoundly calm, incredibly inviting, and wonderfully cocooning. It truly is a lovely place to lie back, relax, and admire all the hard work that has gone into its transformation. The harmonious blend of textures, the soft natural light, and the carefully curated elements converge to create a haven that nurtures the soul and provides a much-needed respite from the outside world. It serves as a constant reminder that our homes should be deeply personal sanctuaries, reflecting our innermost desires for comfort and peace.
