The existing kitchen was remarkably small and lacked the open-plan feel we desired. To address this, we made the strategic decision to demolish the old garage adjacent to the property and construct a spacious new extension. The physical effort and time commitment were immense, testing our patience and stamina. However, the financial dividends were equally significant, freeing up funds for those crucial splurge items, and the immense satisfaction of knowing we built so much of our home with our own hands made every moment of hard work ultimately worthwhile. This pendant was specifically chosen to subtly complement the finish of our kitchen tap, creating a cohesive look without being overly ornate or expensive. The beauty of these choices is twofold: they perfectly suit the contemporary aesthetic of our kitchen, and they can be easily and affordably updated or swapped out in the future if we ever decide to refresh the room’s look. Smart lighting doesn’t mean sacrificing style; it means choosing effectively.

Even after the major structural and interior elements were complete, we recognized the importance of setting aside a small, dedicated budget for new tableware and decorative accessories. While we already possessed a collection of crockery and various decorative items, these final touches are crucial for truly ‘completing’ the space and injecting personality, making it feel homely, inviting, and meticulously finished. These are also elements that can be easily added to, or changed, over time to refresh the look of your kitchen without a major investment.
For instance, the beautiful terracotta jug and coordinating bowl we sourced from Habitat perfectly complement our quartz worktops, adding a rich, deep, and on-trend earthy tone that grounds the room. We primarily use the jug as a stylish water pitcher during dinner times, but it also effortlessly doubles as a charming vase for fresh flowers from my garden. This month, it’s bursting with vibrant dahlias – I’m so delighted I planted them earlier in the year at the beginning of lockdown. They bring so much joy and a splash of natural beauty to the kitchen at the moment, illustrating how simple additions can significantly enhance the daily experience of your home.
